II. Have you seen SEWSS the Movie?
In the last newsletter, we told you about STATISTICA Enterprise-wide
SPC System, SEWSS, a complete quality control solution that fully
integrates state-of-the art data access technology with STATISTICA data
analysis software.
SEWSS offers knowledge-sharing for users of all levels, a comprehensive set
of state-of-the-art SPC tools, and an easy-to-use interface. SEWSS is a
completely customizable system with practically no limit with regard to
flexibility. Designed for company-wide use, SEWSS accomodates the needs of
all types of users from managers and engineers to operators and line
personnel. In addition, SEWSS serves as a extensive reporting tool that
allows for pre-defined reports to be automatically printed or generated in
HTML or MS-Word compatible formats.
We recently developed an informative presentation of SEWSS, which uniquely
demonstrates how SEWSS can positively impact your company's bottom line.

III. STATISTICA Neural Networks, Version 4 Now Available!
Are you unable to find patterns in your data using traditional methods
because your data are too complex? As many users already know, STATISTICA
Neural Networks is the ultimate data mining, exploration and modeling tool,
ideal for exploratory data analysis, pattern recognition, and data
clustering.
We are excited to announce that STATISTICA Neural Networks, Version 4 is
now available! This version features a wide variety of new features and
enhancements, such as:
* Intelligent Problem Solver Wizard: This problem-solving Wizard walks
you through necessary steps for creating, training and running a neural
network. This feature makes STATISTICA Neural Networks, v. 4 ideal for nn
novices.
* Network Sets: Different trained networks for a given data set are
organized in a set (buffer of networks) to compare performance.
* Sensitivity Analysis: What if-type analysis to decide what inputs can
be ignored in the model (similar to partial correlation/redundancy approach
in regression).
* New network training algorithms: Quasi-Newton (alternative for
Back-Propagation) and Learned Vector Quantization (alternative for Kohonen
training).
* Text Import Wizard and Export Wizard: Improved facilities to import
ASCII files, control over delimiter character, missing value handling,
storing additional network info (e.g., about training, verification set, etc.)
* Response graph: Evaluate performance of network when modifying one
input while holding all others constant (similar to response profiling in
DOE).
* Receiver Operating Characteristic Curves (ROC): Graph for evaluating
misclassification performance in classification networks with binary output
variables (2 class problems).
* Clustering Networks: Improved features for including new Class labeling
algorithms (for automatic assignments of labels for radial centers).
* Many more enhancements to existing features: Correlation coefficient in
regression statistics, KL Post-Processing, etc.
For more information, to order an upgrade or new copy of STATISTICA Neural
Networks, please contact StatSoft technical services via e-mail: info@statsoft.com.au.
IV. STATISTICA News Group
It has recently come to our attention that a STATISTICA support news group
has been formed by end users.
Apparently, this news group was started by a statistician in Austria
interested in improving mutual support among STATISTICA users. This
support is concerned primarily with questions and respective answers
concerning the statistical modules of STATISTICA, graphical resources and
all other statistical aspects in the use of STATISTICA.
Should you like to join this group you may do so by sending a blank e-mail
(with no subject) to:
statistica-subscribe@egroups.com
You will then get further information concerning subscribing to the list.
If you join, you can read group messages in your e-mail in-box or on the
Web at
http://www.egroups.com.
V. New Reviews
STATISTICA has received the highest rating in every comparative review in
which it was featured since its first release in 1993. Here are just a few
recent reviews. For a complete listing of reviews, please visit our web
site at www.statsoft.com.au/reviews.html.

STATISTICA has received another superb review in SCIENCE magazine, a widely
recognized general science journal read by a broad spectrum of scientists.
In his review, SCIENCE reviewer Kevin Ahern calls STATISTICA a "carnival of
stats" and the top program of its kind on the market. He summarizes:
"STATISTICA maintains the top position among standardized statistical
computer programs." And notes, " A reasonable questions to ask is whether
one should pay almost $1,000 for STATISTICA's functions, which are also
available on less elegant, but less expensive programs..." but follows this
question with, "The answer lies in the program's performance." The writer
further applauds STATISTICA by saying, "Author's cite STATISTICA in the
methods section of their papers because of the programs high standards,
commitment to accuracy, and technical sophistication for output."
STATISTICA has received the "1998 Technological Distinction Award" from
BYTE (Spanish Edition) in recognition of the advanced technology of its
system features, computational procedures, and graphics. STATISTICA is the
only data analysis product that was among the winners. Other products that
received the same award include Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0, Adobe PhotoShop
5.0, IBM Visual Age Java Professional, IBM Think Pad 390, and HP DeskJet
895 Professional Printer.

VIII. FAQ and TECH TIPS
The FAQ section on our web site is a simple way to find answers to
questions about STATISTICA at your leisure. Search the user-friendly
question-and-answer format using key words to obtain summary information on
the most commonly used conventions, features, and facilities in STATISTICA.
This month's helpful tips:
Q: How do I change the number of decimal points in a spreadsheet without
doing them column by column?
A: Click on the Vars button and then choose All Specs. You will see a
column labeled Format, and the numbers represent the number of digits
before and after the decimal point. Change the numbers in the first cell
of the column to your desired decimal placement, then click on the word
Format at the top to highlight the entire column. Right-click and choose
Fill Block Down.
Q: How can I connect the midpoints of a range plot?
A: Make the regular range plot, then go into the graph data editor. Right
click and choose to add a plot. In the plot layout, change the new plot to
a line. After the new plot has been added, copy the data from the
scatterplot to the new line. Finally, redraw the graph.
TECH TIP: You can "convert" your STATISTICA graph (.sta) file into a .jpg
file by saving the graph as HTML (if your program is recent enough to have
this option). Set the Page/output graph options to "screen resolution" and
then print the graph to the RTF window. Save the RTF window as HTML by
clicking on File then choosing "Save as HTML". You will have two files, an
HTML file and a .jpg file. For example: TEST.htm and TEST_pict0001.jpg.
