Top Five Statistical Software Products STATISTICA One of the Most Popular Statistical Software Products for Fourth Consecutive Year
For the fourth year in a row, STATISTICA has been rated one of the top five products in statistical software by Scientific Computing & Instrumentation, a popular magazine among scientists and engineers. Determined by reader response to items published in over a 12 month period, Scientific Computing & Instrumentation published the year 2000 winners in the recent July 2001 issue. Editors chose the products that generate the most reader interest, as indicated by the use of the Reader Service Card, in a wide variety of product categories. Winner of QA/QC Software Reader's Choice Award STATISTICA the Winner of Scientific Computing and Instrumentation Reader's Choice Award in QA/QC Software Category
For a fifth consecutive year STATISTICA has received high marks from Scientific Computing and Instrumentation readers in multiple categories. STATISTICA is the winner in the QA/QC software category for the second year in a row in Scientific Computing and Instrumentation's July issue. STATISTICA was also a finalist in the category of statistical software.
Stocks and Commodities STATISTICA Receives Reader's Choice Award from Technical Analysis of Stocks and Commodities
STATISTICA recently received the Reader's Choice Award and the highest ranking ("Finalist") among general purpose statistics software packages in the "AI Software (Expert, Neural)" category of the Reader's Choice Awards published in the 2001 Bonus issue of Technical Analysis of Stocks and Commodities. Next to STATISTICA, only very specialized packages, designed specifically for trading/forecasting, received accolades. No other general purpose statistical software package was even mentioned in the results of the vote. The additional fact that StatSoft products have never been advertised in this publication, so readers know STATISTICA only from other sources, makes this award especially flattering.

Photronics Compliments the Scalability and Flexibility of SEWSS in DM Review
In the February 2001 issue of DM Review magazine, STATISTICA Enterprise-wide SPC System (SEWSS) received a glowing review from Photronics, a leading worldwide supplier of photomasks, high precision quartz plates used in the manufacture of semiconductors. In 2000, after a team from Photronics conducted a thorough investigation of several SPC packages, they chose the unique scalability and versatility of STATISTICA Enterprise-wide SPC System (SEWSS) in order to guarantee the quality of its products shipped to consumers. Photronics recently implemented SEWSS at six sites internationally and plans to have six more sites on-line by March 2001. SEWSS was selected because of its ease of integration with Photronics' existing manufacturing execution system and because it provided flexibility beyond the existing system. According to Barbara Manville, Photronics director of corporate software development, StatSoft representatives worked diligently to resolve issues specific to their organization. Manville stated, "The best part of working with StatSoft has been the expertise of the technical support staff who are well versed in both statistics and the inner workings of the package." Creating Control Limits
Question: In IQC, how can I create control limits from points known to be in control, but use these limits on all of the data?
Answer: Go to the Sets tab and the Make-a-new-set Wizard. This should guide you through the process.
As an alternative to using the Make-a-new-set Wizard, you can create new sets using the options given in "Specs for new or modified set:" box. Type the name for the new set in the "Label" text box provided. When the "Compute from" option is checked, you can specify whether to compute the new set from a range of consecutive samples, from samples marked by a coding variable, from all samples and from new samples. When computing from a consecutive range of samples, you will need to specify the range of samples to use in the drop-down lists From and To. When computing from a coding variable, you need to specify which variable contains the codes (use the Vars button) and which codes to use. When the "Apply to" option is checked, you can specify where to apply the statistics and specifications from the new set to a range of samples, to samples marked by a coding variable, or to all samples. Once you have defined all the specs for the new set, press the Create button to create the set.

    Random Numbers from Arbitrary Distributions
Random numbers can be generated in STATISTICA for all continuous and discrete distributions, using the standard inversion method (Muller, 1959; see also Evans, Hastings, Peacock, B., 1993). First generate a Uniform random number, and then use the inverse distribution function for the distribution of interest to generate the random variate values.

In practice, care must be taken not to use uniform random numbers that are (almost) 0 or (almost) 1, since the inverse distribution functions at the extreme margins may return in some cases the missing data code. For example, suppose you wanted to generate random variate values for the Weibull distribution, with . scale parameter .5, shape parameter .6, and location (threshold) parameter 10. You could use the following line in the Variable dialog, in the Long label or formula field, to generate those values:

    =vWeibull(rnd(1)*.99999+.000001,.5,.6,10)

You could, of course, also use this formula in the appropriate context in a STATISTICA Visual Basic program, or any other place where STATISTICA accepts user defined functions or equations. Note that the rnd(1) function will generate uniform random numbers in the range from 0 to 1; by multiplying those values by .99999 and adding .000001 you guarantee that the inverse **Weibull distribution function vWeibull is not called with a very small (almost 0) or very large (almost 1) probability value (where it might return a missing value; the constants used in this example guarantee .000001<=p<=.999991); thus the variable computed in this manner is guaranteed to contain only valid random values from the specified Weibull distribution (except for the extreme tails).

Note that STATISTICA's probability routines are extremely robust, so you can use constants (to define a range 0< x< 1) to include a wider range of probability values at the extreme ends of the 0-1 range if you wish. However, the inverse probability functions for values that are equal to 0 are not defined, and will return missing data.
